Operation Smile is an organization made up of volunteers whose sole purpose is to help children with facial deformities. They work with public and private organizations that will help families that may have a child suffering from those conditions and bring smiles back into their lives. This organization is not limited to helping only children but it will help young adults too.

There are many celebrities that have joined this organization to spread the smiles. They are called ‘Smile Ambassadors’. Operation smile has been bringing smiles to children and young adults for over 25 years and have a long list of “Smile Ambassadors’. Some of the many include Jessica Simpson, Roma Downey and most recent Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey is singer, songwriter, and actress that is best known for her amazing vocal range. She has been a supporter of Operation Smile for the past four years and attended various fund-raising events including The Smile Collection fundraising event in New York in 2006. Carey has continued her support of Operation Smile by becoming a Smile Ambassador in 2007.

Many families are afflicted with facial deformities and do not have the funds to obtain corrective surgery. Thankfully there are organizations like Operation Smile that are available to help the families in need. Many top surgeons will donate their time and skills to help these families and bring smiles back into their lives. It is unfortunate that many do not understand facial deformities that are often caused by amniotic band syndrome.

Amniotic band syndrome is a set of congenital birth defects believed to cause entrapment of fetal parts, usually a limb or digits, in fibrous amniotic bands while in utero. This condition is not genetic and it is extremely unlikely for it to affect any future pregnancies. No two cases are alike and although many make be affected with deformed limbs or digits, amniotic band syndrome can also affect cleft palates, a facial deformity.

Thankfully there are programs like Operation Smile that are available for families in need of care for their children and will be taken care of by world-renowned surgeons. To learn more about Operation Smile and how you may help, visit their site.
