Babies Want Boxes For Christmas

Living in a boxCreative Commons License photo credit: Larsz

Every year parents go crazy buying their children Christmas gifts.  They seem to really go crazy when it is their first child.  Later we find out that once our baby can hold themselves up and play they  tend to love the boxes that gifts came in much more then they do the gift that came in them.

But don’t get upset.  It happens to all of use parents. So when someone tells you that spending all that money on a gift is not a great idea becasue our infants really will not appreciate them, you may want to consider what they are saying.  Especially if your friends have their own children.

So what exactly does our babies love so much about these boxes?  It may be because boxes come in all shapes and sizes and is easy for our children to move around and get in and out of.  The boxes weigh next to nothing so if they fall on our children they will not get hurt.  And lastly we all now that cardboard taste awesome!

Since our babies love those boxes so much dont fight it..  This is a great time to teach your children all about imagaination and what all they can do with these boxes.

One type of box you probley have laying around your house that your children will love isbaby wipe boxes.  Your children can open anc close them, put toys in them and use them as building blocks.  Trust me they will have hours of fun. You can store your sons cars in them or your daughter can use them to make a baby bed or store their baby clothing in.

As your child grows, they will start to be able to turn just about anything they can find into some kind of toy. You may have somethings that you don’t want your child to be playing with make sure  you baby proof your home.

Our children grow up way too fast.  One second they are brand new, just home from the hospital and need our full attention.  The next second they are trying to run the house and don’t need your help at all. Giving your child very simple items to play with teaching them so much.  So face it all babies love to play with boxes and in turn you are teaching your child to use their imagination.

Thanksgiving Table Setting

Now we all know that during Thanksgiving the food is the most important thing.  But if you sever that wonderful meal on paper plates then that will make the meal that much less appealing.

It works both ways. If you invest some time and effort into decorating your Thanksgiving table –your overcooked turkey and undercooked beans will be less noticeable as well.

Your Table Setting

Bring out the good linens for your guests. If you don’t have a Thanksgiving tablecloth, you can use some Thanksgiving or fall themed fabric. There are even some very nice looking fall and Thanksgiving themed disposable table cloths available.

The Amazing Dishes

The type of dishes you use is up to you. If you are mostly entertaining adults and this is a fairly small get together, it may be a good idea to use your fine china.
On the other hand, if you are entertaining a large crowd and have lots of kids in the mix, opt for disposable dishes, cups and cutlery. Clean up will be much easier and you don’t have to worry about dishes breaking.

Buy some orange or green cloth napkins. You can find these reasonably-priced at most discount stores. They will add a nice “holiday” touch to any table.

WOW Centerpieces

If you don’t plan on putting all the food on the table, and you have the room, create a Thanksgiving themed centerpiece. This can be something as simple as a bowl of miniature pumpkins, gourds and native corn, or a fall flower arrangement. If you have a cornucopia, fill it and lay it on the table, allowing some of the corn and pumpkins to roll out of it.

Little touches make a big difference. You could scoop out a pumpkin and serve dip in it. Use mini pumpkins with names written on them as place cards.

Turn an apple, some toothpicks and a few miniature marshmallows into a turkey

Start by setting the apple on a flat surface. Insert a toothpick with a large marshmallow on one side. Add some raisins as eyes. For the turkey’s tail, add four toothpicks with a miniature marshmallow on each end to the other side of the apple. Voila – a turkey for each guest that also makes for a fun and healthy snack.

Set the table the night before to free up time during the big day.

If you set a nice table, arrange for most of the food to be set out on a separate table, buffet-style. Consider getting hotplates, crock pots etc to keep food warm while it is sitting out.

Planning the Perfect Thanksgiving Party

Thanksgiving with FriendsCreative Commons License photo credit: Editor B

Start Planning Early

Nothing can spoil a Thanksgiving party more than a burned-out hostess. So, be sure to start planning your party well in advance, make a master list of what needs to be done and when, and start cleaning and preparing ahead of time. Purchase non-perishable items the week before your event. Don’t forget to buy the turkey early as well. It will take several days to thaw in the fridge. If you have room in your freezer, you can purchase the turkey and other frozen items weeks ahead of time.

Delegate the Turkey

A great way to entertain the men is to put them in charge of the turkey. This may be untraditional to some, but in many areas of the country, the men are in charge of deep-frying the turkey. There’s nothing quite as entertaining as watching a group of men standing around a vat of boiling peanut oil, discussing the turkey. Plus, it gives you more freedom to enjoy the party.

Plan activities

Board games are always fun for kids and adults. Get everyone laughing with the newest game. Or buy a DVD-style game like Scene-It and gather around the TV for some trivia. Of course old family favorites would be a bit hit as well. Dust off that old edition of Trivial Pursuit or Monopoly and get everyone playing.

Just for the Kids

Set up a craft table for the kids. Set out coloring pages (if you can get some Thanksgiving ones, that would be great). You can find lots of coloring pages online. Just print a few of them for each child.  That should keep them busy while you prepare the rest of the food.

Lay out pieces of orange, brown, and yellow construction paper and show the kids how to make a turkey. Or have the kids make pilgrim hats out of black and white construction paper.

For the Adults

One of the staples of Thanksgiving is football. Oftentimes the men gather in the living room to watch the game. One way to keep the party lively is to give them a football and send them outside to toss it around during commercial breaks. This can really get the men talking and having a great time. And, ladies – don’t be shy. Jump right in there with them.

De stressing Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving just around the corner I am sure you are starting to stress out. And there a reasons you should be stressed.  One You are going to be cooking a full three courses meal for over 20 people, two you will have family in your house asking you a million questions and probley 80% of them you don’t want to answer, and three you are going to be probley gaining a little weight over this holiday season.  But there are a few ways to destress this holiday seaon.

Plan, Plan Plan.

You need to start planning ahead as early as possible. From getting an early head count to planning the menu well in advance, you’ll feel much better knowing that you have at least one part of the day under control.

Lists are your best bet to avoid getting stressed out. Keep a master list of everything you need to do, along with smaller daily to-do lists and of course grocery lists. And then of course there’s the “Honey Do” list, which brings us to…

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Get your family to help clean and get ready for the big day. They can run errands for you, help set the table, decorate and cook along side with you.

Ask every guest to bring a single dish. With everyone chipping in it will quickly add up. Ask those family members and friends who are “culinary challenged”, to bring some chips, drinks, or even napkins and paper plates.

Don’t forget to ask them to help you clean up afterword either.

No one expects you to handle everything on your own. If you try and feel frazzled, they’ll feel uncomfortable and won’t enjoy the day as much.

Are you worried about getting drilled about the same questions?
Practice in advance how you’ll answer those questions. If you know you’ll get questions about weight gain or your husband’s lost job, prepare yourself in advance with answers.

Practice your answers to some of the questions you’ll be getting. If you can repeat the answers out loud enough before the event, you’ll feel more confident answering them when the time comes.
If you still feel uneasy about the event, tackle it with a friend or hang out with a likeminded family member. Or have a secret signal with your husband for “help” so he knows to come rescue you.

The Great Pumpkin! Is it Real?

NJ Pumpkin PatchCreative Commons License photo credit: jsgphoto

Ok,  every one knows about the Easter Bunny, Old Saint Nick, even the tooth fairy, but what about the Great Pumpkin?  There is only one who is rumored to have even seen the great pumpkin and he has not other witnesses to validate his story.  So, does the Great Pumpkin Really exist?

We need to take care of this issue once and for all.  This story began with Charles Schultz and a young boy by the name of Linus, but that story took off and now kids just want to know the the real true story.

Now Linus claims that the Great Pumpkin will  visit every pumpkin patch all around the world.  He will be visible to the one that he believes is the best pumpkin patch.  And the children that are waiting for the Great Pumpkin at that patch will get candy and treats for their efforts.

Well now lets think about this, kids don’t grow pumpkins do they?  Now the kids may plant the seeds but most of the maintenance and labor is done by the parents or adults.  So why are the kids getting all the good stuff?

Now the Great Pumpkin was created by Peanuts Creator Charles Schultz. And Linus Van Pelt is one of his most memorable characters. Now Linus tries to convince his friends that they all should wait in the scary pumpkin patch instead of going trick-or-treating.

Now all the kids blow Linus off except for Charlie Brown’s sister Sally. Sally is in love with Linus and she follows him year after year and never sees the Great Pumpkin.  Pretty soon she is upset because she does not ever have any candy.  HMMMM, wonder if her parents know what she is doing every Halloween?

Now some parents have taken The Great Pumpkin story and made their own traditions out of it.  Such as, children who donate part of their candy will get a friendly visit from the great pumpkin, who will take their candy and leave in its place money or toys. Our children never eat all their candy anyways and it becomes a win, win situation.

Maybe this fall is when the Great Pumpkin will make his appearance at your pumpkin patch.  Who Knows?

Fun Pumpkin Activities for Your Children

Have you ever just given your child a pumpkin and let their imagination run wild? They can do amazing things with a pumpkin if you sit back and let thier imagination work.

The small pumpkins are just too cute.  You will normally find them in the produce department and often they look more like a fall decoration then anything else.

Next time you are at the store pick up a couple of these pumpkins and bring them home for the kids.  Although these tiny pumpkins are too small to carve. You can give each one a different face.  Pick up some non toxic paint and let the kids go to work.

You could also use different crafting supplies to decorate these little pumpkins.  You can use those funny little squiggly eyes, different colors of contruction paper, pipe cleaner, or may other craft supplies to turn these cute little pumpkins into beautiful centerpieces or you can put them around the house as full decorations.  If you happen to use non toxic paint you can later skin the pumpkinds and each them without making you sick.

The tiny pumpkins don’t bruise or dent. You could also use them for fun outdoor games instead of using the bigger ones.  You could play pumpkin bowl or or a fun game of pumpkin toss.  If you are going to play these games make sure you do it on a soft surface so that the pumpkins don’t get damaged.

You don’t have to use the actual pumpkin to play different pumpkin activities, you could just use the image of the pumpkin.  You could create felt pumpkins and hang them around the house.  You could also draw a pumpkin on a big piece of paper and draw in the eyes and mouth and play pin the nose on the pumpkin.

Since we know all kids love to cook you could have your kids get all the seeds out of a pumpkin and let them do roasted pumpkin seeds.  You can find that recipe here.

If there are some favorite neighbors or even some elderly couples in your neighborhood your kids could give away decorated pumpkins to them. They neighbors will love the gifts and the kids will feel very proud.

You can also take empty gallons of milk and cut the tops off and paint the whole jug orange and then paint black eyes, nose, and mouth. Add a little sand in the bottom and a votive candle and then you can use them to light your walk ways on Halloween night.

There is so much you can do with a pumpkin so you and your child sit down and have some pumpkin fun this halloween.

What Exactly is a Pumpkin?

Gords!Creative Commons License photo credit: Phil Romans

When I think of pumpkins I think of a beautiful pumpkin patch with tons and tons of bright orange pumpkins laying all around. Those beauful orange fruit grow from the vines that normally run along the patch floor. When carved they can make funny faces or scary images. Or what is better then a hot baked pumpkin pie. But have you ever wondered what is a pumpkin?

Although the pumpkin is a strange looking fruit it is not the strangest fruit out there. The pumpkin is a type of gourd squash.

When you think of a gourd you think of a fruit that you would hallow out and then you may fill it with beads so that it could be used as a noisemaker. Gourds are normally a yellowish green, straight green, or orange in color.

The pumpkin is one of the larger gourds known and this gourd can be used for so much more then pretty on your table or a noise maker. You can add a candle in the pumpkin during Halloween but you could also fill it with soup and place it on the dinner table.

There are alot of different ways you can cooking a pumpkin. You could slice it up and fry it much like you would if you were frying suchini. Although the pumpkin is larger and much rounder then other squash you can still do many of the same things. A pumpkin also keeps for a long time. Once a pumpkin is cut off the vine you can store it in a dark cool place (make sure it is kept up off the ground) and it will normally keep for a few months.

If you look at the stem of the pumpkin you will notice that it resembles that of the stem of a yellow squash or Zucchini. But you will also notice that it is not near as flexible and is much more prickly. You should not pick up a pumpkin by it’s stem because that could damage the pumpkin.

Do you know the meaning of the word pumpkin? Pumpkin means “large melon”. You can either eat the pumpkin raw or you can cook and eat the pumpkin. You will receive much more nutrition if you eat the pumpkin raw then if you cooked it. Alot of people probley don’t think of the pumpkin as a fruit, but one criterion for considering something a fruit is it has seeds. And since a pumpkin is completely full of seeds that makes it a fruit.

And you can do a couple things with those seeds. You can roast the seeds and eat them that way or you can use them as a garnishment on other dishes. But Did you know that not all pumpkins are orange? Yes there are some that are albino. I thought that they used some kind of dye to make pumpkins white but I found out different when I began researching pumpkins.

You may also see some purple, green or even read pumpkins. Could you image decorating your porch with fall colored pumpkins? But until we start seeing more of these colored pumpkins check out Easy Pumpkin Painting.
